SEA LEVEL SCIENCE : The PROTECT PROJECT

PROTECT Sea-level rise is a European H2020 project aiming at producing robust global, regional and local projections of sea level rise on a range of timescales.

ENGLISH

The overarching scientific objective of PROTECT is to assess and project changes in the land-based cryosphere, with fully quantified uncertainties, in order to produce robust global, regional and local projections of SLR on a range of timescales. The project will place particular emphasis on the low-probability, high impact scenarios (referred to as high-end scenarios hereafter) [Stammer et al., 2019] that are of greatest interest to coastal planning stakeholders. A novelty in PROTECT is the strong interaction between these stakeholders and the sea-level scientists, ranging from glaciologists to coastal impact specialists, to identify relevant risks and opportunities from global to local scales and enhance European competitiveness in the provision of climate services.

JAGUARLAND

Deep in the heart of Brazil, lies a wetland so vast that you can see it from space: The Pantanal.

For over 2 million years, it’s Pantanal itself who shaped a mysterious creature out of sun, water and dirt. A giant, capable of ruling over its lushy land and ensuring its balance…This creature, almost twice as large here as anywhere else in its distribution range, is the jaguar of the Pantanal.

Just like the Pantanal that gave birth to it, it is as dazzling as it is unforgiving. Its beauty is without equal, but its jaw is the most powerful in the animal kingdom.

With the heat, humidity and the enchanting colors reflected in thousands of rivers, the Pantanal seems to cast a spell on any living creature that crosses it: A bewitching fever that transforms you. No one can emerge unscathed from a life in the Pantanal.
This fever is the daily life of Abigail Martin, a young American biologist. 10 years ago, she was shocked by her 1st encounter with a jaguar, struck by the animal’s power of attraction and its aura. Since then, her life has taken a turn, and she now focuses all her energy on trying to unravel the mysteries surrounding America’s largest predator.

UNFU**ING THE WORLD

CONCEPT

“Whether or not we are brave enough to accept it, we have it somewhere in mind: for the last 60 years, the human race has been fucking the world on a biblical scale and at breakneck speed, starting – among other great achievements – the 6th extinction of all life and a new geological era of plastic-based rocks. To get out of this mess, we are going to have to look at the reality of the threats directly in the eye, stop fooling ourselves, and start giving the steering-wheel of the world to people who actually know what they are talking about. Oh, and it might be better to do it sooner rather than later. “

Unf**king the World proposes a much needed new way of looking at the planetary environmental crises we are in. Most people today are tired of the way we talk about those subjects, or they have been so buried under contradictory information, that they even have doubts about their existence of the crises. Combining a totally quirky and satirical tone – very much like this pitch – with state-of-the-art, strict and unquestionable science, we will surprise with unknown numbers & facts, re-establish the truth and give the mike to people that for some reason are mostly absent from the screen : experts and scientists that have nothing to sell. Doing so, we will demonstrate that – contrary to common belief – humans CAN unf**k the world step by step, starting today.

ENGLISH

Alpine soils perform key ecosystem services (ESS) that enable human well-being, ecosystem functioning and contribute to the biodiversity. The importance of sustainable Alpine soil management is being recognised yet insufficiently implemented mainly due to its crosscutting function, fragmented governance structures, diverse sectoral needs, lack of targeted soil information and applicable management tools. The project aim’s to overcome these gaps by linking Alpine soil knowledge, end-users and experts, elaborate sectoral soil information, create best-case practices and promote soil management. By this, it enhances the
applicability of the Alpine Convention Soil Conservation Protocol (SCP) and contributes to the protection, conservation and connectivity of Alpine ecosystems. The project innovatively links expertise and governance on various levels and sectors to jointly develop and implement sustainable Alpine land management policies / strategies.

For almost 5 billion years, the energy stored up in our planet has sculpted, twisted and structured the earth’s crust (…) leaving behind it mysterious geological traces. The Pyrenees Monte Perdido site, radiating out over the Franco-Spanish ridge of the Pyrenees, is one of the most impressive of these marks of the passing of time.

These 30,000 hectares, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, have always questioned man on the mystery of their birth.

White Fox Pictures has been lucky enough to be responsible for writing and the production of this 15 minutes educational documentary broadcasted on Internet and in all the Pyrenees National Parks (French and Spanish) visitor centers.
